Getting your band Promoted can be a huge hassle if you dont have the deep pockets of a label backing you.

That's kind of a given right.

Well there is still a lot you can do to promote yourself, both for gigs, and online.

Promoting your music is all about getting people to hear it. The best way to do that is to focus on one thing at a time.

When you have a gig coming up, focus just on promoting that gig. If you just put up your bands first website, focus on promoting that. If you spread yourself too thin, you will never make enough impact to get the attention you need.

Lets start with promoting a gig. Put together a little kit. Include your bands style, playlist, a Demo, a short bio of the group and other "quick look" materials. Send that kit to all the local news papers, community papers and to anyone you think might do a little story on you.

Having a kit, is also a good way to audition for gigs. Having a poster, playlist and the rest looks good to a club owner/promoter.

Now how do you promote?

Start with flyers. Print something up that looks good, but wont cost you an arm and a leg, they don't need to be great art work, just something people will remember. If you have a cool poster take a few of those out too.

Give the flyers to people, stick them under windshield wipers (might want to check on your cities littering and solicitation laws). Get some tape and/or a staple gun and tack them anywhere you can, that wont get you in trouble.

If you have some poster, put them up in high traffic areas, focus on the areas around clubs and bars.

You can also put an ad up on Craigslist, and If you don't have a MySpace profile for your group, make one. You can then promote your show to the groups for your city.

Just a bit of advice on that. Make sure people understand what kind of music you play. You might get more people to your shows by being vague, but you're also likely to make people mad. Even if you mix styles up. You might be a Rap and Metal band. So promoting in forums and groups for both is fine, just make sure you are clear that you use both styles. You don't want to have some thrash metal purest showing up and hating you because you use rap, and vice versa.

On to Online Promotion.

Ive already mentioned two places to advertise about yourself. Craigslist is good for promoting gigs, and looking for new members if you need to. That's about it. If you are giving away demos, you might get away with that. Craigs is pretty strict, and there are people that seem to have no other life, but flagging down any ad they don't like, so be careful.

Myspace can be used to promote gigs, and your band in general. The problem with Myspace, is that probably 60% or more of the people you come across, are also there to promote something. If you are going to really promote yourself on myspace, you need to get into the groups, the forums and soend plenty of time finding new friends. Be yourself, and don't push the promotion part of why you're there to hard. You will turn people away.

Another good source of online promotion for your band, can be Youtube. Its one I use a great deal. If you have a camera (that can hook into your computer), film your shows and put the videos up.

Of course the big one is having your own website.

My name is Ryan and My love in life is music. Listening to it, making it and exploring it. Music really is my drive in life.

I create acidhedz.com to help people learn to make their own music, and to showcase my own. I would like to share my love of music and the joy that come with creating your own, with everyone. Over time the site has expanded to include resources for bands looking to promote their music.
